Mount Aso symbolizes Kumamoto, the “Land of Fire.” The Aso Caldera, with its 1,000-meter-class mountains towering at its center, is one of the largest of its kind in the world.
The vast foothills are brimming with blessings bestowed by the volcano, including high-quality hot springs and clear-water springs.
At the same time, the history and culture of the people living within the caldera are also major tourist attractions. In recognition of this unique interplay between nature and human life, the area has been designated a UNESCO Global Geopark.
